The Bass Ognyan Kanev was born in the town of Bourgas, Bulgaria in 1970. 

His parents moved to the town of Lovetch where at the age of seven he started studying piano at the Children’s Musical School under Tzonka Tzvetanova.

Kanev graduated from the Foreign Languages High School “ Ernst Thälmann”  with English language where he also sang in the school’s choir.


Kanev began his vocal education at Opera Singing Department of the New Bulgarian University, Sofia Bulgaria.

He participated in many concerts and singing venues organized by the department.

In 1993 he debuted in the role of Don Bartolo from “Le Nozze di Figaro”. Kanev distinguished himself as well with the roles of Collas from “Bastien und Bastienne” and Leporello from “Don Giovanni” by Mozart before graduating successfully from the department in 1994. 


In 2000 Kanev attended a master class with Monserrat Caballe at the Principat D’Andorra. 

After a short stay in Milan, Italy, Kanev moved to the USA to study and work.


In 2013 Kanev participated in a master class organized at Treviso, Italy by Signora Donella del Monaco with the Maestri Antonio Marceno and Delfo Menicucci commemorating the legacy of Maestro Marcello del Monaco. 

Kanev was invited to sing at a concert of Associazione “Gli Amanti della Musica Lirica” città di Carini province of Palermo Sicily in 2017.

In August of 2018 Kanev performed in Teatro Apollo as Don Simone in a production of “Il Duello Comico” by Paisiello organized by the Comune di Castellammare del Golfo in Sicily.

Kanev sang at a concert in Villa D’Aragon city of Gera, Germany in march of 2019 following a master class of Maestro Antonio Marceno.

Most recently Kanev joined the Opera Fiesta Group in New Orleans that actively performs in the French Quarter.
